Key Assessment: Target Audience- Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter

The Sun

1. Consider how the protesters are represented

Protesters all around the world are represented differently, but in The Sun majority of the protester's in the articles are showed as violent and dangerous, leaving out all the peaceful protesters which there is a lot more of. The sun hasn't been successful at showing the protesters from a positive side and was more successful at showing how violent and cruel they are. The clothing worn by the protesters is normal clothing, maybe some wore more of their damaged and ruined clothes just in case something was to happen at the protest like a riot or something similar and their clothes were to get ruined. The facial expressions of the protest is pretty clear and straight forwards, they're full of anger, frustration, sadness, disbelief and fear. Each of their feelings shown on their faces is pretty clear why they are feeling this way. They want answers and solutions to the situation that took place not only a few weeks ago, but the multiple other situations where an African American or different colour of skin male/female were brutally murdered by a police officer in the United States. The camera angles in the pictures taken by 'The Sun' are from high angles and also close up, they want to get the best angles to show of the protester's behaviour, feelings and to show how serious the situation actually is. Close up shots were used to show the emotions and pain of the protesters, whereas high angle shots were to show how big the protests are and the sheer amount of people attending them to support and get justice and a solution.

2. Consider how the police are represented

The police shown off by The Sun were majority in a positive way, whereas in reality the reason for the protest was because of how cruel and bad the police were. Even though there is a lot of good cops that are also supporting the movement and are not happy with the way the police work in USA there is definitely a lot more bad and disrespectful cops. Clothing wise all the cops are dressed the same, all varies on the sate they work in and their job role some might be dressed a lot more heavily (equipped with a lot more powerful weapons) and some would be dressed like they would every day at work. All the cops equip them self with dozen of zip ties to use as handcuffs to cuff people that are not behaving properly. The facial expressions of the police officers in the pictures used by The Sun are full of anger, frustration and fear. Majority if not all of the images used by The sun show of how violent and cruel the protesters are, arguing and attacking the cops. The thing that The Sun fail to show about all this is also how violent the cops are during these protests, attacking and harming random strangers in the streets (some that are not even taking part in the protests and are minding their own business). The body language of the police officers is really clear too, even though they are in fear of their life like the protesters them self, they are trying to show their power and dominance by their body language and posture, trying to not show any signs of fear and weakness. The overall image that represent the cops in these articles are majority positive showing them doing their jobs the right way and being safe and cautious holding off the dangerous protesters, whereas in reality the cops are the ones that are the dangerous people in the protest and that every fear due to the situations that happen.

3. Who do you think the target audience is?

The target audience for these articles is literally everyone. People of all ages, races, ethnic backgrounds, social status etc. They want to get these articles about this protests out to everyone to show the scale of this protest and show how bad racism and the use of power is in USA. In some cases you could say it targets the racists people to make them show what their behaviour and words cause to other people and the damage it causes. It could also be targeted at other cops that use excessive power on people and to show the damage their actions bring. In my opinion this can also be targeted at people higher up (President, government etc) to try and a result and a solution or to at least get some support from them and guide them the right way so that they can live their life normally and not have to fear about their life.

4. Is there evidence that suggests the media owners are for or against Black Lives Matter?

You can't find any information that states that The Sun are for or against 'Black Lives Matter' but you can make your own judgement from the articles they write and post online. In my own opinion I think they do support 'Black Lives Matter' just from the articles they make, the might make a lot showing how dangerous the protests are but they also post a lot of supportive articles trying to help out the protest etc. It's not easy to say as definite if they support it or not. But from what I read and saw online in my opinion they do support it. Some people might say they don't due to the articles they post and the way the try and show the protest but that is just how The Sun works and have always been like this.

5. Who owns the media platforms you wrote about in 1.

The owner of The Sun is an 89 year old multi-billionaire born in Melbourne, Australia called Rupert Murdoch. Rupert founded News Corp. He has also founded a lot of other organisations like Fox news, Sky news and a lots more. The rest of the The Sun is owned by his family members known as The Murdoch Family. They are a prominent as international media proprietors in Australia, United Kingdom and the United States. The Murdoch Family own most of the news companies in the world like; The New York Post, The times of London and The wall street journal along side DOW Jones & Company. The family is estimated to have a net worth of over $20.9 billion.

6. How might the ownership of the media platform affect the news reports?

The way an ownership of a media platform might affect the news reports is that in the instance of the platform saying some things they shouldn't of, they can under report the situation and also have the power to keep a lot of things regarding them out of the media. The situation with The Sun is that as they own almost all of the news companies in England and USA, they can easily hide things they might of said from getting out to the public through other news reports. Owning a media platform can also affect the news reports in the way that they can create a strong opinion on a subject and enforce it heavily and make the public believe that this it's the truth when in some cases it's false.
